In-Person Estimates – the only way to avoid surprises

For a trusted moving company like MoveCo Moves, providing an accurate estimate is a commitment to professional integrity and customer trust. Given the unique logistical challenges and ferry complexities associated with moving to, from, or around Vancouver Island, a standardized "flat fee" is impractical. The in-person estimate is not a suggestion—it is the necessary foundation for an estimate that prevents stress and surprise charges on moving day.

In British Columbia, particularly when dealing with long-distance or inter-island moves, the final cost is calculated based on a complex interaction of factors. The on-site assessment is the only way to objectively measure these variables and give you a written estimate you can trust.

Key Variables Influencing Moving Costs

Volume, Weight, and Labor Time

This is the core of any estimate, but its true scope can only be determined by a physical walk-through of the home.

  • Weight vs. Volume: Local moves (typically under 100 km) are often hourly and focused on time/labor. Moves to the mainland or up-Island are often priced based on shipment weight (or cubic feet) and distance. We must visually estimate the total weight of the entire shipment to provide a reliable long-distance quote.
  • The "Hidden" Inventory: Attics, sheds, and crowded basements often contain items that add significant weight and volume, which customers frequently underestimate in phone-based surveys.
Ingress, Egress, and Access Challenges

The effort required to move belongings from the door to the truck is a major labor factor, directly impacting the cost in any move.

  • Stairs and Long Carries: The number of flights of stairs, the distance from the truck's parking spot to the door, and the use of elevators (which may require booking time) all increase the hours required and need to be factored into any estimate.
  • Specialty Items: Moving oversized, heavy, or delicate items like pianos, hot tubs, or large custom furniture sometimes requires specialized equipment, additional manpower, and extra time, which must be itemized.
Distance, Fuel, and Destination Logistics

Even on the Island, time and distances can be significant. For moves involving the Mainland, ferry logistics dominate.

  • Travel Time: For local moves, travel time to and from our base and between any intermediate stops is factored into the total time.
  • Multiple Destinations: Moves involving intermediate stops—to storage units, recycling centres, donation centres, or a relative's home— require more logistical planning, more travel time, and complexity in how the truck must be loaded (optimal truck packing).

The Ferry Factor: Moving To or From Vancouver Island

When MoveCo Moves handles a move requiring transit across the Strait of Georgia, the logistical challenge of ferry travel introduces non-negotiable variables that necessitate an in-person assessment.

  • BC Ferries Logistics: The entire move is dependent on reserving and paying for a spot for a large commercial moving truck (e.g., between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen).
    • Commercial Rates: Moving trucks, especially large ones, are charged commercial rates based on length, which is significantly higher than a standard vehicle and must be accurately measured and booked.
    • Booking and Scheduling Risk: The crew must work within the rigid, pre-booked ferry schedule. Delays during loading or unloading can result in missed sailings, leading to waiting time fees or costly re-booking fees for the truck and crew accommodation.
  • Travel Time Premium: The time spent waiting for, riding on, and disembarking from the ferry adds hours to the total move time. This is non-productive labor time that still requires the crew's presence and payment.

By conducting an in-person assessment, MoveCo Moves ensures all these unique logistical and geographical challenges are accurately factored into an accurate estimate, giving the customer the peace of mind that comes with a transparent price.
